RIP Daniel Jarque (1983-2009)

As we’re sure sure most of the footballing world has heard, Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque was found dead during Espanyol’s pre-season, done in Coverciano, Florence, Italy. He was on the phone with his girlfriend in the team hotel when he suffered a heart attack. When the Spaniard was discovered, both club doctors and Italian paramedics alike tried to revive Jarque without any success.

His death comes two years after Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta, 22, died of heart failure after collapsing during a Spanish league game. Sadly, there have been many more victims of similar tragedies throughout the world in recent years, including Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe and Motherwell midfielder Phil O’Donnell.

Jarque joined Espanyol at the age of 12, making his debut in 2002, and the Spaniard was handed the club captaincy this summer.

Jarque is survived by his girlfriend who is currently seven months pregnant with the couple’s first child.
