Barcelona have confirmed today that Leo will not be in the squad to face Espanyol on Saturday. A Barcelona statement reads: ‘Lionel Messi has been ruled out of the local derby against Espanyol this weekend after test results showed the extent of his ankle injury and he could also be doubtful for the FIFA Club World Cup semi final.
The club said that his progress will continue to be monitored, as the Argentine looks to get fit to play in a tournament which he was unable to compete in previously, as he had a broken toe when Barcelona qualified for the competition in 2006.
