The Argentina international has been in blistering form lately, netting eight times in his last four league games, including hat-tricks against Valencia and Real Zaragoza on consecutive Sundays.
Messi has scored 25 goals in La Liga this season and with his recent goal glut, the 22-year-old is now in a close competition with Rooney and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba for Europe’s Golden Boot award. Rooney has scored 26 times in the Premier League this season while Drogba has hit the net 24 times after scoring a brace against Portsmouth on Wednesday.
Messi, who is the reigning World Footballer of the Year, knows that earning the award as top scorer in Europe would be a great honor, especially with players he is competing against for the honour.
“It would be wonderful to win the Golden Boot. I look at the list and it is sensational to see I have scored more goals than Didier Drogba,” Messi told The Sun. “But to be just one goal behind Rooney is also enormous. Rooney is a big striker and what he is doing is developing into a phenomenal season.”
