Argentina head coach Diego Maradona banished superstar Lionel Messi from training after he picked up a cold, a spokesman has announced.
Messi, 23, was sent back to bed to recover after turning up with the condition. The illness is not believed to be a fever and he will be fit to feature in the quarter-final clash with Germany on Saturday.
An official from the Argentine Football Association said: “He did not train today. He came to the training grounds with a cold, but no fever.” Speaking to Clarin.com, team doctor Donato Villani added: “Messi’s has flu-like symptons but nothing important and it was decided he should not practice. Tomorrow, he will be required to rest.”
Additionally, Messi has continued with his love of all things Oasis. He has vowed to knock Germany out of the World Cup on Saturday – as a favour to former Oasis rockers Liam and Noel Gallagher. The Argentine ace lines up against Germany in the quarter-finals of the tournament this weekend after the European side put England out of the competition last month. And he has promised the Gallagher brothers he will help avenge their country’s humiliating 4-1 defeat – after admitting Oasis albums have inspired his performances at the football showpiece in South Africa.
Messi says, “If they love England as much they do Manchester City, you can tell them from me I will do everything I can to defeat the team who knocked their beloved England out of the cup.”
