Messi Inspires Barca To Last 8

Two-goal Lionel Messi turned in another sparkling display as holders Barcelona marched into the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 4-0 victory over Stuttgart at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Messi, 22, followed up his hat-trick against Valencia on Sunday with a brace either side of the interval to make it 8 goals in his last 4 games, and 31 in all competitons this season, as Barca cruised to a 5-1 aggregate victory. The opening goal of the evening saw Messi take control of the ball at the half way line before breezing past Stuttgart challenges and riffling the ball into the top corner from some 25 yards. The Argentine killed the tie in the second half by scoring his second and Barcelona’s third, a low shot on the turn into the bottom corner of Jens Lehman’s goal.

As well as scoring twice, Messi was also the provider for Pedro’s goal before substitute Bojan Krkic scored in the final minute shortly after coming on. Barcelona join Man Utd, Arsenal, Lyon, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, CSKA Moscow and Bordeaux in the quarter final draw tomorrow.
