Messi Fires Barcelona to Copa del Rey Glory

Barcelona secured their first trophy of the season by crushing Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the Spanish cup final at the Mestella.

The Blaugrana were unable to settle into their ryhthm early on, and were punished when Gaizka Toquero gave Bilbao a deserved lead.  Although Barcelona were able to equalise through a wonderful Yaya Toure strike, the Basque outfit looked the more the liek;y winners.

The Half-Time break was the turning point of the game. Lionel Messi, who had been very quiet once again, sparked into life and scored a deserved goal to put Barcelona infront. Messi went on to take the game by the scruff of its neck, and constantly threatened the Bilbao goal. It was he who laid on a perfect pass for Bojan Krkic to bend in a third goal to effectively kill the Bilbao challenge off. Xavi went on to add a fourth goal, curling in a free kick after Messi had been fouled.

Barcelona have one trophy in the cabinet, and will look to wrap up La Liga away at Mallorca on sunday, before the Champions League final against Manchester United, which may see the Catalans win a historic treble.
