Barcelona sensation Lionel Messi has told a Spanish newspaper that to attain legendary status you have to win the World Cup – setting a clear marker for this summer’s tournament in South Africa.
The praise for Lionel Messi has been gushing in the past week as he has scored eight goals in three games and single headedly carried Barcelona. As a result comparisons with the greats of the game such as Diego Maradona and Johan Cryuff have been frequent.
Messi told El Mundo that “To become a legend, to be great, you also have to win a World Cup.” The Argentinean schemer added: “I have only just turned 22. It’s all happening very quickly and you have to stay calm”. Finally, Messi said “I never intend to disrespect anyone, I just play football. In my own way.”
With his feet on the ground and without letting the success rise to his head, the number one player in the Castrol rankings played off having worked in training to score the goals he scores by weaving through a sea of defenders. “They happen because they happen. I do not think before such runs. The important thing is to want it to happen.”
