Awful Argentina Suffer Defeat at the Hands of Ecuador

Argentina endured another away game horror-show in the altitude of Ecuador, in a 2-0 defeat.

Argentina started brightly with Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez linking well in a 4-4-2 system. The first clear cut chance of the game fell to the Barcelona forward. After good work down the left flank, Gabriel Heinze’s cross was met by Leo who remarkably conspired to miss the target from no more than six yards. Tevez though, squandered an even better chance. He won a penalty after being upended by Ecuador keeper Eligaza, however Tevez saw his poor spot-kick saved.

Argentina would go onto pay the penalty for their missed chances when Walter Ayovi gave the hosts the lead with a stunning 30 yard drive. Diego Maradona and Argentinawere stunned, and promptly conceded a second goal, Pablo Palacios finishing well after a great turn in the penalty area.

This defeat puts Argentina in real danger of missing out on the 2010 world cup. Their advantage stands at just two points, with a very tough final four games awaiting them.
