Messi Offers Thoughts on Argentina’s State of Affairs

Argentina star Lionel Messi has declared himself happy after his side beat world champions Spain with a convincing display at El Monumental in Buenos Aires. The 23-year-old said it was important to reconnect with the Argentina fans following the disappointment of the World Cup in South Africa and said now is the time to look to the future.

“The truth is that beating the world champion makes you happy. We suffered a lot of bitterness and to reconnect with the fans in this game was very nice. I’m happy for our victory,” he said, as quoted by AS. “There wasn’t much in it. This team moves the ball well from side to side, but we used it quickly and did things right from the beginning. After getting it we tried to hold it. It was a complete game. Now we must move on.”

Lionel Messi also renewed his support for interim Argentina coach Sergio Batista, and said he hoped he would stay as coach until the 2014 World Cup.

“My wish is for him to stay,” Messi told Argentine daily Ole published Tuesday. However, the Barcelona star acknowledged that “this is not something that players decide.” On the day Argentina were set to play world champions Spain in a friendly in Buenos Aires, Messi noted that “you need time to work” in order to get to play like the European giants. “I don’t take ‘Checho’ (Batista) as an interim coach, and I don’t feel like he is in a trial period,” he said.
