Lionel Messi’s current squad number with both Barcelona and Argentina is the number 10. However, this has not always been the case. Messi’s friendly debut saw him wear the number 14 shirt back in 2003, with first official number assignment coming 2004-05 season, the number 30 shirt. After maintaining this number in the 2005-06 season, he was awarded the number 19 shirt for the following 2006-07 season. Leo wore the number 19 shirt for the final season in 2007-08. After Ronaldinho left Barcelona in 2008, Messi inherited his number 10 shirt for the 2008-09 season.

For Los Albicelestes, Messi started out with the number 18 shirt in the under20 cup of 2005. This number was retained in his transition to the senior team. However it should be noted that he did wear the number 19 shirt for Argentina on select occasions. The inheritnece of the number 10 shirt came with the international retirement of former number 10: Juan Roman Riquelme. Manager Diego Maradona choosing Messi as his successor to the precious shirt that Diego once himself blessed.
