In the aftermath of the disappointment of losing in the World Cup Final, Leo Messi was recognised by FIFA as the best player of the tournament and awarded the Golden Ball award. Messi is quoted as saying he wasn’t interested the recognition, whilst Argentine manager Alejandro Sabella believed that Messi warranted the award but national legend Diego Maradona did not agree with the panels decision.
In the tournament itself, Messi scored 4 goals, gave 1 assist, created 23 chances (record), completed 46 dribbles (record) and picked up four man of the match awards (record).
Barcelona star Messi said of the award: “The truth is it doesn’t interest me at this moment. We wanted to win the World Cup for all the people in Argentina and we couldn’t do it. We tried, but we didn’t have the luck we had in other games.”
Sabella said Messi’s award was “very deserved”, adding: “He played a great World Cup to get us where he did.”
Former manager Maradona said that he “would give heaven and earth to Leo. But when marketing people want him to win something he shouldn’t win, it is unfair.”
